Mingled Yarn: Gender Stereotypes

What are the pitfalls that we need to be aware of regarding gender stereotyping and how can they be avoided?

Many people are being forced in to fit their stereotypes. Just because you see many people with skinny bodies doesn't mean you have to be like that. Advertisers are playing tricks on children and parents so they could shape the child's mind easily. The world is being shaped into a skinny, pretty girl and a strong, handsome boy. Inspiration plays a big role in developing self-confidence, if their is no one to lead the child in the direction they will keep getting lost in the world of media. Not fitting the stereotypes doesn't mean you're abnormal but it's just that you are different, and in this world nobody is the same, not even twins. Nowadays magazines does not promote independence, but it conveys the message that young people should be more concerned with looks, relationships and that they should be fitting into the stereotype to be pretty, famous, and popular.

Leonardo Da Vinci: A Renaissance Man

Leonardo Da Vinci is truly a Renaissance man because he was born during the Renaissance period and had traveled to many marvelous Renaissance cities such as Florence and Venice. Da Vinci was a man full of new creations and ideas. His ability to observe, create accurate anatomic detail and his imagination helped him build a new remarkable path in history. Da Vinci took in his surroundings and made it into a new thing. What made him a man of the Renaissance is mostly his new ideas and inventions for this is what the Renaissance time period is all about.

Risk-Taking

I think that risk-taking was the most important factor towards Brunelleschi's success because if Filippo didn't take the risk to try and explain his ideas then he wouldn't really be known till today. Filippo took the risk of explaining to the community his idea (the egg trick) which can lead to really good consequences which will shoot him up the ladder or bury him underground. When he succeed in gaining the support of the people he had to prove that he was right, he had to sure his calculations are perfect even the tiniest of mistakes can make the dome collapse on him and his fame, his name can be turn completely upside down. Filippo had three risks to worry about his calculations, support and money, and the incredible dome. The support and money is half of it but the other half is to actually finish the dome. Without his risk-taking decisions he wouldn't even be able to try out his dome.

How do the actions and decisions of people affect change?
Filippo's actions changed how other artists think. All artists wanted to be famous so they probably came up with new extraordinary ideas trying to make their's the best. Filippo hatched one of the eggs of time that during the Middle Ages was locked up by the church. Filippo marked one of the new beginnings.

Where do new ideas come from?

I think that new ideas come from your imagination. Just any imagination that pops in your head can make a brand new idea. I think that ideas can come from a lot of different places. From friends, the past, your life, books, movies, it is just everything. Everything is an idea. When you let your mind wonder a new idea will pop up. WHen you think about the past a new idea will pop up. So in general I think ideas can come from any where you imagine it to be from, and you can get new ideas any time, even when you don't expect one.

My Favorite Story - What makes a good story?

The stories we've read in our humanities class were "Lamb to the Slaughter" and "The Sniper." My favorite one is "Lamb to the Slaughter" because the author builds a lot of serious tension that leads us to the climax. I liked how Roald Dahl made the story more interesting by making Patrick a police. Another thing I like about the story is the exposition Roald Dahl introduced his characters with a little mystery by making Patrick act unusual, and finally we figured out Patrick wanted a divorce. The thing that every story must have is a conflict in "Lamb to the Slaughter" the conflict is Mary v.s. Patrick. The conflict is important because it makes the story have a meaning full ending the resolution.

This I Believe

'Dreams can come true if you have the courage to pursue them' this quote from Walt Disney struck me. I was in fifth grade finding a quote for my 'Night of the Notables' project. The person I choose for the project was Walt Disney - a man who succeeded in following his dreams.

'I want to succeed in following my dreams of opening a pet-shop too.' I thought. My dad said that if I didn't truly like animals I shouldn't be dreaming about this and that if I didn't like animals then when I actually open the pet-shop I would get bored of taking care of the animals and cleaning them. I didn't agree with him, I love animals - especially dogs - and I also know for sure that I would never get tired of cleaning out their cages or tidying their messes. I know that this is the job I want most in my life. No matter what other people say I will always stick to this dream. I still have a long way to go before I can work, also meaning that I still have a long time to think about the job-even if I don't think my dreams will change.

Now two years have passed by, but I still think back to the day I found the quote. I became a seventh grader with the dreams of opening her very own pet-shop. Over the two years I have been collecting information on how to train dogs. I considered that a success for when I went back to Thailand my dog did exactly what I wanted it to do. So now I know how to teach dog basic tricks but that would be no where near to doing a good job when I open the pet-shop.

When I was in sixth grade I was dying for a dog. I begged and begged and begged but my parents never gave in. On the third trimester there were some good news. There was an activity that went over to the SPCA every Wednesday and helped them took care of the dogs. So I joined the community service group and that was my first chance to be close to dogs, and help the SPCA raise the awareness of abandoned dogs on the rise. This experience pushed me even further on following the tracks to my dreams.

Now I want to open a pet-shop and train dogs. I would take the dogs I trained to agility courses and competitions to earn extra pocket money.
Overall I think I know a lot about dogs as a seventh grader. I even found out that dog's clothes aren't only for cuteness or making your pet look richer and fresher but it also makes the pet itself warm, it also keeps the coat in a healthy condition.

A dream-this I believe. A dream that comes true-this I believe. Succeeding in our dreams-this I believe.

The image I picked for this essay is the image of a dog sleeping. I picked this image because it reflects my want of opening the pet shop, and my believe about dreams.

1066 game reflections

Game #1
In this game we either played as William the Duke of Normandy or as Harold Godwinson king of England. In this game I enjoyed being Harold because I find it more challenging than being William. I learned about the strategies the 2 contenders might have used to fight and that the job of a king is over whelmed with risks which mostly are for their people. At the first time I played as Harold I got shot in the eye and died then a few times later I won playing Harold so I switched characters. So I know was William I died like seven or ten times while playing William but then once I won but I didn’t remembered the steps and choices I made to win.

Game #2
On this game we had to play by the story mode, which I never finished. We had an army and they choose for us which character we are. On the first time I randomly played and I lost so I started again, which in that case was a long game and I also lost. I didn’t really enjoy this game as much because it took too long and I think there are too many buttons, commands etc. What I learned from this game is the position you should place your army and how you can attack.

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas Response

What is the relationship between decisions and consequences?

The relationship between decisions and consequences is that they come together as a pair. Every time a decision is made at least one consequence comes along with it. For example when Shmuel was suppose to be polishing glasses he decided to eat the food that Bruno gave him. The consequence was that L.Kotler saw Shmuel eating so he ask Bruno if he actually gave the food to Shmuel which Bruno known to be true but chooses to deny that. The consequence of this decision is that Bruno- by saying that seems to mean that he have choosen to had also denied the friendship between him and Shmuel which for Shmuel is maybe the worst thing Bruno his only friend could do to him.

Band-the void

What did you think was going to happen? What clues in the text led you to believe this?
Answer: I thought that whoever gets the on with the black dot on it will leave the village, so that when time goes on the village doesn't get over populated. The clues that led me to this was that the color black doesn't sound very pleasent so it must be something bad. Also at the end of page 301 Tessie who had the black dot on her paper opened it last so everyone had the attention on her.
How did you feel when the end of the story was not given to you?
Answer: I was very curious about what was going to be inside the mysterious paper and wanted to open it. I think that everyone couldn't wait to open the piece of paper. I try to guess the ending by following the given clues but their wasn't any clues that led to the real answer.
What would you call this story? Why?
I would maybe call it "The Black Lottery" or something similar to kind of emphazie the badness of the lottery. I would name it like that because at first everyone seemed to be happy about the lottery but it is actually bad.
How did you feel when you read the end of the story? Explain.
The end of the story to me was very surprising because it turned out very bad when the first of the first clues were given that it should sound and be good.
Why did the author leave these voids in the story?
I think the author left these voids in the story to make the story more interesting. It also makes people think deeper into the story to beable to get more clues about the ending.
